Dan left the Royal Navy in 1988 after 9 years as a navigator. He then joined the wine trade, first as a salesman at Laytons wine merchant and then at Bibendum, the wholesaler. He rose to be joint managing director there before being poached by Tesco in 2006, becoming the grocer’s Group Director for beers, wines and spirits. In 2015 he joined Berry Bros & Rudd, the 300 year old wine merchant in St James’s as their Chief Executive.
After a very brief excursion into Private Equity, in 2019 he was recruited by Richemont to lead James Purdey & Sons into its next era. Fortunately a keen country sportsman, he also loves wine and cooking, gardening (if it involves a mower or power tool) and boats.
He is a Trustee of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust and an advisor to a number of wine businesses. He lives in North Dorset and London.
